Designated as a historic pathway on the Tennessee Heritage Arts & Crafts Trail.
Directions: The loop begins at intersection of East Parkway & Glades Road, down to end of Glades Road, down to end of Buckhorn Road, then back down East Parkway to Glades Road.
The Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community is the largest independent organization of artisans in the United States. The diversity of crafts you can see when you visit is quite amazing. Officially founded in 1937, the Gatlinburg Arts & Crafts Community began as a group of area craftsman seeking to be closer to their places of creation amidst their tools and resources. Thus, after years of peddling their goods in downtown Gatlinburg, a group of local artisans decided they would invite tourists to come visit them closer to their homes where they made their crafts. These original artisans included: John Cowden (woodcarver), Lee Ogle (broom maker), and Noah McCarter (chair maker). Soon after, dozens of other crafters followed suit. Today the town of Gatlinburg is home to the nation’s largest organization of independent artisans, over one hundred and twenty. These group of craftsmen are well known for their numerous talents which range anywhere from broom making to detailed oil painting to detailed hand-sculpted items. Located on a convenient 8 mile loop road, this historic arts and crafts area has been designated a Tennessee Heritage Arts & Crafts Trail. Visitors to this area can experience the craftsmanship and artistry in person at the studios where these artists create and become a part of the magic and tradition that runs deep in these parts. Visitors will watch artists create a plethora of original collectibles and folk art such as candles, baskets, quilts, trolls, brooms, pottery, jewelry, dolls, ceramics, oak and willow baskets, scrimshaw, silver-smithing, leather, stained glass, wearable fashions, sculpture, lithographs, fine photography, frameable art, oils and watercolors. A trip to the Great Smoky Mountain area is not complete without a visit to this historic and landmark community. The Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community hosts several events throughout the year showcasing true Appalachian artwork and demonstrating the techniques that the artisans use to create their works.

A history of the Arts and Crafts Community
No one planned it when the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community developed in
Gatlinburg, it just happened. For years, artists and craftsmen practiced their specialty in
downtown Gatlinburg. Sometimes in studios and galleries and more often, out on the street,
where visitors and residents could watch them develop their creations. People came and watched,
and the craftsmen did what they do best; they crafted. Around 1937, John Cowden and several
other craftsmen decided to go home…weather, increased traffic, excessive commissions to shop
owners, and other disruptions were impacting their ability to work as they wanted, and they
decided to move their craft shops out to the Glades, where many of them lived. They left
downtown to the shop owners and set up their own shops, studios, and galleries, in or near their
homes. They invited the visitors to Gatlinburg to come out to the Glades to see their facilities
and look at their wares. They soon realized they could do even more and better work, because of
the availability of their tools and supplies. Not to mention the reduction of stress because of
being close to the comfort and surroundings of home and family. Shortly after John Cowden
made the move, another long established artisan and member of the community, Carl Huskey, a
furniture maker, followed suite and opened the Village Craft Shop in the Glades. Soon after that,
dozens of other artists and craftsmen started migrating toward this new center of activity, and the
seeds were sown for the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community. As the word spread, more and
more visitors to the area found their way to the Glades in search of locally created art, carvings,
furniture, brooms, pottery, sculptures, candles, dulcimers, scrimshaw, and dozens or other locally
created artistic creations. As the visitors increased, so too did eateries and lodging. The
community continued to grow and new facilities were built to house the ever growing number of
artists and craftsmen. Several chapels were built to accommodate the hundreds of young couples
coming to Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains to get married. Then even more facilities
were built to meet the demand for lodging when many of these same couples returned with their
families, for vacations, in later years. Between May and October of 1982, over 11 million people
visited the area while attending the Knoxville’s World’s Fair (officially known as the Knoxville
International Energy Exposition) and one of Gatlinburg’s best kept secrets, the Great Smoky
Arts & Crafts Community, was discovered. That’s just how it happened. For over 75 years this
Community of artists and craftsmen has continued to grow and prosper and has become the
largest artistic community in America. With over 100 artists and craftsmen, dozens of eateries,
quaint lodging, wedding chapels, and acres of free parking; the Glades is a must see on your visit
to the Smokies. If you’d prefer, there is also a dedicated trolley route (the Yellow route) for your
convenience. All of the members of this unique organization are located on an 8 mile loop,
bordered by Glades Road, Buckhorn Road, and State Highway 321 (also known as the East
Parkway). Drive out to see us, or take the trolley and see what everyone is talking about. Its hand
made in America; it’s a step back in time; and it is all here for you while visiting the beautiful
Great Smoky Mountains.
Directions: From downtown Gatlinburg, go east on Highway 321 North (East Parkway). Go
three miles to the beginning of the Great Smoky Mountains Arts & Crafts Community. Follow
Glades Road to Buckhorn Road, and back to 321…turn right, and you will complete the 8 mile
loop when you return to Glades Road.

Cliff Dwellers Gallery
668 Glades Road Gatlinburg TN 37738 436.6921 www.cliffdwellersgallery.com
Compiled from Gatlinburg.com, inspiration.travelmindset.com, cliffdwellersgallery.com & literature provide by Cliff Dwellers Gallery.
An early postcard for The Cliff Dwellers Gallery proclaims, “Built into the solid rocks in the heart of the Smokies.” The gallery certainly retains that distinction even though it was moved six miles from its original location from downtown Gatlinburg in 1995. Cliff Dwellers Gallery has the honor of being one of the first, successful and independent fine arts galleries in the area. It was originally founded and built in 1933 by artist Louis Jones, who owned & operated it until he retired in 1955.
The gallery has changed ownership a few times since then, but to this day remains faithful to its original purpose, to show & sell traditional & contemporary fine crafts & art. When Louis retired he sold the gallery to the two ladies, Louise Hendricks & Maxine Donahoo, that had assisted him for many years in the store, who continued in his footsteps until the early 1990’s when one died & the other retired at age 85. The building was sold & set to be tore down to make other use of the land. Jim Gray had always admired the building’s architecture & was Louis’s largest art collector, so his son, Chris got the building on a handshake deal from the owner & hired experts to dismantle, move & restore the building, thus saving it. After careful research, the building was moved & placed next to Jim Gray’s Gallery, the former Glades Lebanon Baptist Church. Restoration was completed in 1998 with the original sign being repaired & restored to its former glory.
The Cliff Dwellers Gallery was back in business & operated by a group of ladies known as Fiber Creations (a weaving co-op), who officially changed the name back to The Cliff Dwellers Gallery due to popular demand. They gave Chris a 20% commission from everything they sold until the business took off and they were able to make the mortgage payments on their own.
Today the ladies all work as partners, artists & friends to operate the gallery. The Gallery is owned and operated as a cooperative by four local artists, four associates and carries the work of approximately 50+ area artists, continuing to operate in the fine tradition of the building by offering a wide selection of fine crafts and art.
The owner artists are Louis Bales making watercolors & hand painted gourds, Sherry Mummert doing weaving, Pat K. Thomas doing marbling & Winnie J. Utterback making pottery.
Cliff Dwellers Gallery truly is a showplace for contemporary and traditional fine crafts. They really do have something for everyone & feature stained and enameled glass, watercolors, handmade and hand marbled paper, pottery, quilts & other woven clothing, placemats, runners, rugs, tapestries, baskets, hand painted gourds, and soft sculptured dolls. You can also find products from woodworking, woodturning, wearable art, handwoven lines & so much more. They also offer classes, special events & demonstrations throughout the year.
