Feature Story

Cliff Dwellers Gallery

668 Glades Road Gatlinburg TN 37738    436.6921   www.cliffdwellersgallery.com
Compiled from Gatlinburg.com, inspiration.travelmindset.com, cliffdwellersgallery.com & literature provide by Cliff Dwellers Gallery.
An early postcard for The Cliff Dwellers Gallery proclaims, “Built into the solid rocks in the heart of the Smokies.” The gallery certainly retains that distinction even though it was moved six miles from its original location from downtown Gatlinburg in 1995. Cliff Dwellers Gallery has the honor of being one of the first, successful and independent fine arts galleries in the area. It was originally founded and built in 1933 by artist Louis Jones, who owned & operated it until he retired in 1955.
The gallery has changed ownership a few times since then, but to this day remains faithful to its original purpose, to show & sell traditional & contemporary fine crafts & art. When Louis retired he sold the gallery to the two ladies, Louise Hendricks & Maxine Donahoo, that had assisted him for many years in the store, who continued in his footsteps until the early 1990’s when one died & the other retired at age 85. The building was sold & set to be tore down to make other use of the land. Jim Gray had always admired the building’s architecture & was Louis’s largest art collector, so his son, Chris got the building on a handshake deal from the owner & hired experts to dismantle, move & restore the building, thus saving it. After careful research, the building was moved & placed next to Jim Gray’s Gallery, the former Glades Lebanon Baptist Church. Restoration was completed in 1998 with the original sign being repaired & restored to its former glory.
The Cliff Dwellers Gallery was back in business & operated by a group of ladies known as Fiber Creations (a weaving co-op), who officially changed the name back to The Cliff Dwellers Gallery due to popular demand. They gave Chris a 20% commission from everything they sold until the business took off and they were able to make the mortgage payments on their own.
Today the ladies all work as partners, artists & friends to operate the gallery. The Gallery is owned and operated as a cooperative by four local artists, four associates and carries the work of approximately 50+ area artists, continuing to operate in the fine tradition of the building by offering a wide selection of fine crafts and art.
The owner artists are Louis Bales making watercolors & hand painted gourds, Sherry Mummert doing weaving, Pat K. Thomas doing marbling & Winnie J. Utterback making pottery.
Cliff Dwellers Gallery truly is a showplace for contemporary and traditional fine crafts. They really do have something for everyone & feature stained and enameled glass, watercolors, handmade and hand marbled paper, pottery, quilts & other woven clothing, placemats, runners, rugs, tapestries, baskets, hand painted gourds, and soft sculptured dolls. You can also find products from woodworking, woodturning, wearable art, handwoven lines & so much more. They also offer classes, special events & demonstrations throughout the year.
